Pre-Season Outlook
Williams was the easy call for the No. 1 pick in this year's draft, and it was just as easy for the Bears to anoint him the Week 1 starter before he had taken even one practice snap. At 6-1, 215, Williams is an elite athlete who can stand tall in the pocket and fire to all parts of the field with his rocket arm or use his mobility to throw on the run with just as much accuracy and velocity. Practically the only criticism of Williams is that he invited trouble at USC by holding the ball too long in hopes of a home run. The Bears have surrounded him with an excellent supporting cast too. Eight picks after Williams, the Bears drafted Rome Odunze, a 6-3 wide receiver with 4.45 speed. The team also signed Keenan Allen, giving it one of the league's better wide receiver trios with holdover DJ Moore. Chicago remade its backfield with free-agent acquisition D'Andre Swift, who is also a good receiver, and returns tight Cole Kmet, who's been a force in the red zone the last two seasons. New offensive coordinator Shane Waldron shouldn't have much trouble putting Williams in a position for success.

Analysis: Williams, the No. 1 overall pick of April's draft, was always a lock to start Week 1 over Tyson Bagent or Brett Rypien, but the team has wasted no time making Williams' position official, with Friday being the first day of on-field workouts for rookies. That allows Williams to immediately begin familiarizing himself with Chicago's offensive scheme without having to worry about splitting any reps. He can start establishing chemistry with fellow top-10 selection Rome Odunze during rookie camp,…read more
